Japan has a long history of story telling. It can be traced back to Buddhist preaching in the 6th century when the monks used some humor in their sermons to attract the interest of the audience.
Some Rakugo stories are taken from Japanese folk tales, some from Chinese farces, and a few of them such as God of Death (shini-gami) and Sake Drinking Bet (tameshi-zake) are even derived from European countrie.
Rakugo as a professional art of narration started in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto in the 17th century. One of the prominent Rakugo performers in the 19th century is Kairakutei Black from Britain, who wrote and performed Rakugo at comedy houses called Yose in Japan.
Now, there are about 800 Rakugo performers in Japan.
